A walled Cotswold garden in full maturity at golden evening

Hartwell & Vale

Gardens that look like they've always been there.

THE COTSWOLDS

The work

Three gardens.

The Kitchen Garden · Oak beds, espaliered pears, and a gate that closes with a proper click. Supper tastes of the garden by July.

The Long Borders · Twelve feet deep on both sides, planted to peak twice and forgiven in February.

The Walled Garden · A bare quarter acre took the garden in one season. The walls had waited long enough.

The craft

Done properly.

Hands setting a course stone on a dry-stone wall
Walls go up dry, the old way. Gravity has kept them honest for three hundred years.
A lavender row edging a gravel path in evening light
Plants are chosen for the county, not the catalogue. Lavender earns its place by August.
A freshly raked gravel path through clipped yew
We rake the gravel before we leave. It's the last thing you see and the first thing we think about.

The people

Small on purpose.

Six of us, two Land Rovers, one standard. We take on eight gardens a year and turn down more than we take. The gardens we keep, we keep for decades.

Your garden

Tell us about your garden.

We visit, we walk it slowly, and we write you a proper letter about what the ground wants to do. No drawings until we've stood in it twice.
